At Thurton Auto Centre, we recently had a very lucky customer who narrowly escaped a complete engine failure on their Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost. What we found when carrying out their wet belt service was shocking—and it highlights just how crucial regular servicing is!

The Shocking Discovery

As part of our wet belt service, we stripped the engine and were met with a disaster waiting to happen. The wet belt had started degrading so badly that the teeth were literally falling off in our technician's hands. To make matters worse, the oil filter was completely blocked, starving the engine of vital lubrication. Had they continued driving for much longer, the engine could have suffered irreversible damage, leading to a costly replacement or even a full engine rebuild! 💸

Why Does This Happen?

Many modern engines use wet timing belts, which run inside the engine oil for quieter operation and improved efficiency. However, over time, these belts degrade due to: ✅ Oil contamination ✅ Heat and wear ✅ Breakdown of belt material

When the belt begins to degrade, bits of rubber mix with the engine oil, leading to blockages in the oil pump and filter, which in turn starves the engine of oil—a recipe for disaster!

Common Vehicles Affected

It’s not just Ford EcoBoost engines that suffer from wet belt issues. Other vehicles, including those fitted with Ford EcoBlue, PSA (Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall) engines, and even Toyota ProAce City models, are also known to be affected. While it’s common for motorhomes to last 30+ years, proper care and timely repairs are crucial. Here, we break down the top 10 most frequent motorhome issues and provide simple solutions to keep your adventures on track.

1. **Engine Management Lights (EML)**
The engine management light can be a sign of several engine-related issues, particularly those affecting emissions. While some faults may disappear after restarting, it's essential to have the fault codes read by a technician to identify the problem. Common issues include clogged EGR valves or faulty throttle bodies. It’s best to replace affected parts promptly to prevent long-term damage.

 2. **Electrical Warning Lights**
In Fiat Ducatos, the electrical warning light often stems from a poor earth strap between the gearbox and the chassis. Check the earth strap connections, as these can degrade over time, affecting the ECU’s operation. If that doesn’t solve the issue, the alternator or its wiring might need inspection.

 3. **Electrical Steps Not Working**
Motorhome steps can fail due to dirt buildup, electrical issues, or mechanical failure. To troubleshoot, test the wiring and ensure the motor and mechanical components are functioning properly. If the issue persists, the limit switch may be faulty and need replacing.

 4. **Fridge Not Working**
Fridges running on gas can fail if the burner feed pipe becomes blocked with residue. Cleaning and reassembling the burner often solves the problem. If the fridge isn’t working on 12V, check the wiring and fuses connected to the vehicle battery and alternator. A malfunctioning PCB could also be to blame.

5. **Water Pump Failure**
Water pumps are essential for maintaining pressure in the plumbing system. If your pump is cycling on and off without any taps being used, it could be due to a water leak or a faulty pressure switch. Inspect the system for leaks, and if the pump is malfunctioning, check the microswitches in the taps.

6. **Control Panel Issues**
